God, can I really trust You?
Psalm 139 holds a special place in my heart. It was the Bible passage that most comforted me during a recent time of discouragement. The entire chapter is really wonderful, but it’s the first six verses that I would like to focus on now.
O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
My Journey
Just a few weeks after finding out that I was expecting Atlas, I lost my job. I was devastated. I had been working a job since I was a teenager. Unemployment was unfamiliar and scary. Plus, having a kid was a “maybe I will” and “maybe I won’t” sort of thing. I was facing both things and it was a paralyzing fear.
For some reason, God thought that this was the best way and best time to teach me about His trustworthiness.
Your Journey
When giving out words of encouragement, I like to caveat a lot. After all, I haven’t experienced everything and I don’t know how everyone feels; it’s impossible for me to know. But that’s okay because I can direct anyone in any situation to Psalm 139:1–6. It is here that real encouragement is given. It is here that we learn how much God knows about our every movement, word, and feeling, as well as, past and future situations.
Honestly, it doesn’t matter if I understand what everyone is facing or feeling, it only matters if they know God understands. Not only does he understand our feelings and situations, unlike me, he can actually do something about them.
Who God Is
To really help this sink in, just take a few moments to consider a few of the attributes of the God who sees us (Genesis 16:13).
God is infinite and eternal — time and space don’t hinder Him from working
God is self-sufficient — He doesn’t depend on anyone or anything else to function
God is all-knowing — There is not a minute detail in all of time and space that is unfamiliar to Him
God is love — Everything he does is done for our good, whether we see it or not, because he is the source of all good and all love
Those are just a few of God’s many attributes, but focusing on these can give you the assurance that He’s well worth our trust.
Trustworthy
It seems like God is now taking us all on a journey to show us how trustworthy He is. I hope by sharing a little of my journey and the verses that helped me, you will be encouraged to take the journey toward a deeper trust in God through all of today’s uncertainty.
